Gabrielle's background

Gabrielle Guthrie.jpg

Gabrielle is adept at navigating Australia's complex environment and planning laws, and has advised in matters in all states and territories and at Federal level.  Her expertise is broad and includes advising on compliance and enforcement; transactions; major development projects and contentious matters such as merits and judicial review and civil claims. Gabrielle has a strong regulatory background which has seen her working on large scale white collar crime, tax and other criminal investigations.  She brings this expertise to her work on environmental enforcement matters and achieves pragmatic and commercial outcomes for clients.

She understands the commercial environment and has spent two secondments as in-house legal counsel to Orica Australia Pty Ltd and the London Stock Exchange.  Importantly for an environmental lawyer, Gabrielle also has a depth of understanding of public interest environmental law and the importance of public and stakeholder engagement, from her work advising community and environmental groups at the Environment Defenders Office in Victoria and in the Northern Territory at EDO NT.

Gabrielle has an undergraduate degree in Geoscience and a strong understanding of technical environmental issues.

My approach is founded on collaboration and accessibility.

I work with the best in the business, be it leading barristers, ex-regulators, environmental consultants, planners and auditors (and yes, other lawyers!) to put together the right team for you.  Through established and comprehensive networks, I work with the best specialists for your issue, at a range of price points.

I bring over a decade of legal experience in private and public interest environmental law to the table.  That includes experience advising on cases in every state and territory of Australia, as well as the UK.  I also bring a sharp scientific eye to legal advice, having gained a BSc Hons in Geoscience, prior to becoming a lawyer.

My clients value being able to explore ideas together, talk things through, and sleep easy knowing that things are covered.  I believe that the best solutions often come from discussion and that client insight is invaluable.  I like to hear the full story (and the back story) and to understand your strategic goals.  So I generally hate billable hours and clock watching (see pricing model below).

I don't pretend to know it all.  No one can.  Environmental law is complex, constantly changing and often unique.  Every site is as different as every client.  Transparency and accessibility are central to my service.

With Guthrie Legal you buy an experienced senior lawyer
to work directly with you, and to bring in other experts as required.
